What fits in a 5m³ unit (really, with concrete references)

5m³ is Brazil's most-rented size — and the most misunderstood. It's not a box: it's a 1.7m cube, floor to ceiling. Here's what actually fits, without optimism or fear.

First, picture the volume

5m³ isn't floor area — it's volume. Picture a cube roughly 1.7m × 1.7m × 1.7m, or a 2m² floor unit with 2.5m of height. Most people underestimate it because they think only about floor footprint and forget you can stack to the ceiling.

That's the difference between 'nothing will fit' and 'a 1-bedroom flat fits'. Whoever uses the height gets double the usable space.

What fits in a 5m³ unit

With smart stacking, 5m³ comfortably holds the contents of a 1-bedroom apartment or a full bedroom:

• 1 two/three-seater sofa (upright, on its side)

• 1 double bed (mattress + base, vertical)

• 1 medium wardrobe (disassembled saves 60%)

• 1 fridge or 1 washing machine

• 1 table + 4 chairs (chairs stacked)

• 10-15 medium boxes (books, clothes, kitchen)

• a few loose items (fan, lamp, frames)

What does NOT fit (without forcing)

5m³ isn't for a whole house. If you have 2+ furnished bedrooms, lots of large appliances, or many bulky pieces, you'll need 9-12m³. Signs you've overshot:

Stacking upholstered furniture on top of other furniture (ruins it), clogging the access aisle (you can't reach the back), or the unit door not closing properly. If you hit this, size up.

The stacking rule

Heavy and flat at the bottom (appliances, table tops), light and fragile on top. Same-size boxes build stable 'walls'. Disassemble whatever you can — wardrobe and bed disassembled save up to 60% of space.

Leave a central aisle of about 40cm to reach the back. Without an aisle, you end up emptying half the unit to grab one box — and the 'right' size becomes small in practice.

How to get it right the first time

Don't trust your eye. List your furniture in the [space calculator](/en/calculator/) — it sums the real volume of each item and suggests a size with slack to move around. It's 2 minutes that avoid self storage's costliest mistake: renting too small and having to switch (or cramming everything and wrecking the furniture).

And first of all: run the doubtful items through the [Keep or Let Go tool](/en/keep-or-let-go/). Sometimes what would push you to 9m³ shouldn't be stored at all. Supplies to pack and stack well are at [/en/packing-supplies/](/en/packing-supplies/).
