When NOT to use self storage

We're a self storage directory. And we're still going to tell you when renting a unit is NOT worth it. Because recommending wrong once costs trust forever.

A directory that turns you away

It sounds odd for a self storage site to tell you not to use self storage. But the truth is simple: our business depends on you trusting us. And trust is built by saying 'this isn't for you' when it really isn't.

Here are the scenarios where renting a unit is, honestly, a waste of money.

1. When items are worth less than the unit

If you're storing old furniture, obsolete electronics or boxes you can't even remember the contents of — and the combined value is less than 12 months of unit rent — you're paying to postpone an inevitable discard.

Run the test: [calculate keep vs let go](/en/keep-or-let-go/). If it's red, donate, sell or discard. It'll hurt less than the recurring bill.

2. When 'temporary' became permanent

Self storage shines as a bridge: a move, a renovation, a 6-month trip. But if you've been paying for a unit for 3 years 'until you decide what to do', it stopped being a bridge and became a very expensive extra room you never visit.

Honest rule: if it's been over 18 months and you have no date to remove your things, you probably never will. Time to decide.

3. When there's a free alternative

Got space at your parents'? A friend with an empty garage? An idle attic? For small volumes and short terms, favours beat contracts. Self storage makes sense when you need secure space, with your own access, owing nobody a favour — not when it's just disorganisation of what you already have.

4. When organising would fix it

Sometimes the problem isn't lack of space — it's too much poorly organised stuff. Before renting, try: vertical shelving, organisers, vacuum bags (cut clothing volume by up to 75%). Often what seemed to need a whole unit fits in a well-optimised closet.

When self storage really is worth it

To be fair to the other side: self storage is excellent when you have genuinely valuable items + a defined timeframe + need for your own access. Moving between homes, renovation, seasonal e-commerce inventory, an inheritance to sort calmly. In those cases, it's the right tool.

If that's you, [explore the directory](/en/directory/) or [ask our concierge](/en/contact/). If not — save your money. We'd rather see you come back when you truly need us.
